Tolkien. The book is also the story of a multi-generational family curse that courses through the book, leaving troubles and tragedy in its wake. This was the most dynamic, entertaining, and achingly heartfelt novel I've read in a long time. My head is still buzzing with the memory of dozens of killer passages that I dog-eared throughout the book. The rope-a-dope narrative is funny, hip, tragic, soulful, and bursting with desire. SignatureReviewed by Matthew SharpeAreader might at first be surprised by how many chapters of a book entitled The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao are devoted not to its sci fi–and–fantasy-gobbling nerd-hero but to his sister, his mother and his grandfather. However, Junot Diaz's dark and exuberant first novel makes a compelling case for the multiperspectival view of a life, wherein an individual cannot be known or understood in isolation from the history of his family and his nation.Oscar being a first-generation Dominican-American, the nation in question is really two nations. And Dominicans in this novel being explicitly of mixed Taíno, African and Spanish descent, the very ideas of nationhood and nationality are thoughtfully, subtly complicated. The various nationalities and generations are subtended by the recurring motif of fukú, the Curse and Doom of the New World, whose midwife and... victim was a historical personage Diaz will only call the Admiral, in deference to the belief that uttering his name brings bad luck (hint: he arrived in the New World in 1492 and his initials are CC). By the prologue's end, it's clear that this story of one poor guy's cursed life will also be the story of how 500 years of historical and familial bad luck shape the destiny of its fat, sad, smart, lovable and short-lived protagonist. The book's pervasive sense of doom is offset by a rich and playful prose that embodies its theme of multiple nations, cultures and languages, often shifting in a single sentence from English to Spanish, from Victorian formality to Negropolitan vernacular, from Homeric epithet to dirty bilingual insult. Even the presumed reader shape-shifts in the estimation of its in-your-face narrator, who addresses us variously as folks, you folks, conspiracy-minded-fools, Negro, Nigger and plataneros. So while Diaz assumes in his reader the same considerable degree of multicultural erudition he himself possesses—offering no gloss on his many un-italicized Spanish words and expressions (thus beautifully dramatizing how linguistic borders, like national ones, are porous), or on his plethora of genre and canonical literary allusions—he does helpfully footnote aspects of Dominican history, especially those concerning the bloody 30-year reign of President Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The later Oscar chapters lack the linguistic brio of the others, and there are exposition-clogged passages that read like summaries of a longer narrative, but mostly this fierce, funny, tragic book is just what a reader would have hoped for in a novel by Junot Diaz.Matthew Sharpe is the author of the novels Jamestown and The Sleeping Father. Reviewers agree that Junot D’az's first novel was well worth the 11-year wait. D’az established his reputation with Drown (1996), a collection of short stories that drew widespread praise. With The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, D’az has cemented his place in the literary stratosphere. He garners admiration for the "slangy and kinetic energy of his prose" (New York Times), as well as for the way he hop scotches between high- and lowbrow culture and ties together Dominican and American history (and the problems therein). Some critics cite a distracting (mysterious) narrator, too many digressions, and a difficult narrative structure. Despite these minor flaws, fans of literary fiction should dive right in.

Poor Oscar, He Deserved So Much More In Life!

I tried reading the book but I was caught up by the references made to local New Jersey references. I live by the old Amboy Cinemas mentioned in the novel. The novelist was raised only a few miles at London Terrace Apartment Complex in Old Bridge. We shared the same library. Junot Diaz has been nominated twice for the New Jersey Hall of Fame recently for his services to literature. This novel has won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and it is richly deserved.

So instead of reading the novel, I listened to an unabridged version of the novel at the gym and on bus ride to and from Atlantic City. The novel unfolds about Oscar De Leon, his sister Lola, Lola's boyfriend, his mother, and her father. Their lives are intertwined to explain their circumstances and motives. This novel is richly woven to even understand Oscar and Lola's cancer stricken mother. At first, the readers won't like her but her back story is richly developed to help understanding her.

I hated the ending of the story as it is heartbreaking. The title clues you in about Oscar's life. Oscar is overweight and socially awkward with girls. He desires them but his appearance and obesity hinders possible relationships. He is able to make friends with girls but he is often heartbroken and even suicidal.

Readers of all ages and backgrounds will connect with Oscar as the awkward outsider interested in science fiction and fantasy. He is also an avid aspiring writer himself. Books and writing have always been there for them when the world looked past him.

Poor Oscar, he deserved so much more in life. We all do. I was almost in tears listening to the book on CD. It was actually better listening to the unabridged version. If you don't like reading, try listening to it on CD. I found listening to be richly rewarding and as effective as reading a novel.

Relatable, Dated, Superficial

This book's a colorful depiction of a modern multicultural tragedy.
Its strengths include that it follows multiple generations without becoming encyclopedic and that it leverages Oscar's fictional plight to make a realistic plea for involvement on behalf of all types of outcasts---be their stigmas of culture, health, or social class.

Importantly, it also represents the relationship between these spheres of life: Oscar is Dominican, poor, and unhealthy.
It adds a third-millenial voice to the American narrative of ethnic oppresion, with the university a central symbol for personal fullfilment; de-institutionalized family life as both a freedom and a curse; and the complexity of existing as a displaced black latino in an increasingly diverse world.

It's a fast, memorable read and a poignant perspective, but ultimately offish.
Diaz's chariactures don't develop and have little of the richness that makes for realistic character or strong art.
Ultimately, the reader is left with an understanding of the need for continual governmental, communal, and activist voices on behalf of the evolving forgottens in the US.
But he questions whether the message would have been more effictive if its vehicle were more than a fairy tale.

Magical Realism at its Finest

Pros: For me, this book somehow manages to embody that elusive “magical realism” genre that so many authors have attempted to capture since Gabriel Garcia Marquez coined the category with “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” The characters are real and flawed and complex, the history is rich, and the story sucked me in immediately. This is honestly one of the best books I have read in the past few years. I have given it as a gift to multiple people, and they have had nothing but good things to say about it.

Cons: Don’t buy the Kindle edition. You need the hard-copy with the footnotes right on the page for you to read right as they come up in the book. There are a lot of footnotes, and they’re 100% needed to fully enjoy/understand the book.

About the Author
Julia Keay was the author of several acclaimed biographies including The Spy Who Never Was, With Passport and Parasol and Alexander the Corrector. She also wrote numerous BBC radio documentaries, including two plays, and, with her husband John Keay, co-edited two editions of the Encyclopaedia of Scotland and the third edition of the London Encyclopaedia. The text of Farzana was completed just before her death in 2011.

THE FAMED SPIRITUALIST MEDIUM RECOUNTS THE EARLIER HISTORY OF THE MOVEMENT

Emma Hardinge Britten (1823-1899) was a key figure in the Spiritualist Movement, as a writer, orator, and practitioner; she has also written Nineteenth Century Miracles Or Spirits and Their Work in Every Country of the Earth and Autobiography of Emma Hardinge Britten. (NOTE: Page numbers below refer to the 1970 565-page University Books edition.)

She wrote in the Introduction to this 1870 book, "we write for that posterity to whom our facts of veritable history will be of incalculable value, though to us, the living actors therein, they may be of little or no importance. Besides, the memory of these marvels rapidly passes away with the flight of time... Spiritual[ist] journals... have all... been too short-lived to become points of reference to posterity... Obviously, then, a duty rests on some one to collect the best and most reliable evidence that the circumstances of the case will afford, so as to conserve in a compendious form the records of either the commencement of a new era or an episode in human history as unparalleled in its preternatural marvels as it is rife with instruction, abundant in religious, social, and political influence, and prophetic of a mighty and momentous future for mental and spiritual science." (Pg. 16-17)

She states, "Admitting that the modern spiritual manifestations in America first began... at Rochester in 1848 [with the Fox sisters], it would still be impossible to separate the influence which the prevalence of the magnetic idea [of Franz Mesmer] exercised... Between the epochs ... is an interregnum... connecting both, belonging to both, yet standing alone, and unrivalled in the marvellous character of his occult endowments, and the irresistible nature of the influence he has exercised upon humanity. This personage is Andrew Jackson Davis..." (Pg. 23)

She comments, "Thus at Buffalo, New York, three gentlemen, whose position as leaders of science should have deterred them from the commital of their names to a published verdict of which subsequent events should have made them hearily ashamed, gravely rendered their testimony to the effect that the manifestations produced through the Fox sisters were all the result of the snapping of their knee and ankle joints!" (Pg. 92; the text of this document is given on pgs. 153-154)

She observes, "it can be no matter of surprise that persons who profess the broadest license on the marriage question should have accepted the demonstrations of spirit communion as well as those who believed in the strictest views of the conjugal relation, or even advocated the asceticism of celibacy. Still the mere fact that certain individuals professed 'free love' doctrines became convinced of the truth of spirit communion was quite sufficient, when all other causes of offense failed, to give a handle for antagonism to fasten the obnoxious and totally irrelevant opinion upon the entire body of Spiritualists... and labor to make the two words appear to be of synonymous meaning." (Pg. 233)

She admits, "When it is remembered that Spiritualism numbers one-fourth at least of the population of the United States in its ranks, it can be no matter of surprise to find many persons associated with it, whose character and actions are calculated to inflict far more damage on the cause than the most bitter antagonism or secular opposition. Amongst these, none have been so active for mischief as 'spiritual mountebanks' and dishonest mediums." (Pg. 239) Later, she adds, "Ninety-nine spurious counterfeits can never destroy the value of one precious piece, fresh from the treasury of immortality; and that these have been vouchsafed to buy souls from the power of darkness, infidelity, and superstition, we know, and testify of in these startling and wonderful spiritual phenomena." (Pg. 345)

For anyone interested in the history of the Spiritualist movement, this book is absolutely "must reading."

Melissa does an awesome job with this part of the story! The emotions filling me while reading this kept me glued to the pages!

Anna is the same strong, stubborn, hard-headed, outgoing, confident, beautiful, but slightly insecure woman. I still love her and want her as a friend! The connection with her is just made stronger in this portion of her story.

At the end of the last book I found myself a little disappointed and mad at Bentley. But he has won his way back into my heart in this segment of their relationship. I love his confident yet insecure approach to the relationship and always his dirty talking bad boy ways!

I absolutely love Lo and even Andrea has brought herself up in my opinion! Can't wait to start the next part.

Wow..just Wow and just when you think you are falling for Bentley Reed..bam he makes you wanna throat punch him. However he does redeem himself, as the fabulous Melissa Toppen puts it. "He can't be perfect all the time."

Anna is trying to open up and accept the feelings that she is feeling for Bentley.

Bentley is head over heels in love with Anna A.K.A. Logan. One night when he thinks she is going behind his back for information could change things for Bentley and Anna.
This book makes you feel all the emotions. Happy, Sadness, you will cry laugh and wanna throw your kindle. Very well written. You will love You and I Together.

Joyce Cooper-Kahn, Ph.D., a clinical child psychologist, specializes in helping children to successfully manage developmental challenges. Using her expertise in the assessment and treatment of learning, attention, and social-emotional difficulties, she works with children, families, and educators to build children's competencies. Dr. Cooper-Kahn is the co-founder of Psychological Resource Associates, a private mental health practice in Severna Park, Maryland. She is the parent of an adult son with AD/HD and executive skills weaknesses.

Laurie Dietzel, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in neuropsychological assessment and the diagnosis of AD/HD, learning disabilities, PDD, and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Dietzel is currently in private practice with a focus on testing, training, and consultation at Dietzel, Butler & Associates in Silver Spring, Maryland, which she co-founded. She provides local and national continuing education workshops for mental health and educational professionals.

Late, Lost, and Unprepared

Now we have a guide to executive functioning that we can read, mark, dog-ear and rely on over and over again. As a learning specialist for over 30 years, I will use the definitions and assessments chapters to remind myself of the nuances of executive functioning in different learners. I will recommend the family sections for those who are struggling with those issues. And the bulk of the book "What Can You Do About It" will be dog-eared and used over and over again with students, teachers and parents as a reminder of effective interventions and accommodations. "Late, Lost, and Unprepared" has a strong research and clinical base, combined with a friendly style. It is THE book to own on executive functioning.

Very accessable advice

This book was recommended by my daughter's teacher. It's purpose is to help parents work with children with executive functioning weakneses. These include difficulties in initiating or completing tasks or assignments, problems with organizing tasks and time managment issues. As a parent, you may find something about yourself in there as well!
Unlike some books on similar topics, this book is very easy to read and understand. It also includes basic advice for parents of teens. It is filled with practical suggestions and it guides you directly to the recommendations that apply to your situation. It is a good starting point for parents who are wondering how they can help their child or teen succeed in school. However, if you consider yourself well read on the topic, it is unlikely to add much to your knowledge.

Very good, straight-forward

Very good, straight-forward, practical advice. The reason I only gave it four stars is because I think way too much of the book is spent describing executive function deficits, and only the second half provides helpful strategies. But the chapters are clearly labeled, so it is easy to skip over sections that cover material you already know or provide strategies for problems that don't apply to your child. There is also an easy-to-read, relatively short chapter on the underlying philosophy of their approach that is useful for sharing with teachers, other professionals, and your child.
