Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country A great novelization!
By K. Wyatt
From her first Star Trek novelization, "Star Trek V The Final Frontier," J.M. Dillard has been the "go to" author for Pocket Books when it comes to the novelizations for the movies and the novelization of Star Trek Deep Space Nines pilot episode, "Emissary." This is deservedly so, her work in the novelizations of such important events in the Star Trek genre have been exceptional, and this novel is no exception to that rule.
"Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country" as a film was an extremely well told story written by Leonard Nimoy, Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, with the screenplay being written by Nicholas Meyer and Denny Martin Flinn. J.M. Dillard's work in this extraordinary novel not only serves to novelize that original story, it enhances it beyond measure. She does a beautiful job of adding the characters personal thoughts of the events surrounding them and of adding to the story with "between the scenes" sequences that makes this one of her best efforts.
The premise:
The Klingons, having been long time rivals of the Federation whether through open war or unbridled skirmishes have suffered a great catastrophe when Praxis, A Klingon moon suddenly explodes, removing a key energy resource center for the Klingon Empire. Suddenly finding themselves facing too many problems, more or less of their own creation, in which they've spent too much on their military budget and not enough on environmental and other concerns, the Klingon Chancellor, Gorkon must make a decision to sue for peace between the Empire and the Federation.
The main catalyst for that peace turns out to be Captain Spock, who has been working in secret negotiations with Chancellor Gorkon and is now ready to begin those talks in earnest. Spock has managed to secure the use of the Enterprise and Captain Kirk in order to rendezvous with Chancellor Gorkon and escort his ship back to Earth to begin those negotiations.
Here is where the writing of the screenplay and J.M. Dillard's writing kicks into the high gear of intrigue when a conspiracy uncovers itself long enough to fire several torpedoes from the Enterprise and hit Chancellor Gorkon's ship, knocking out their gravity and then two conspirators beam over and murder Chancellor Gorkon and several other Klingons. Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy both beam over, hoping to be able to help Chancellor Gorkon, but he dies and they're charged with his murder.
What follows from there is nothing less than one of the best stories written in the Star Trek genre and filmed, to date. From political intrigue and an extraordinary space battle to some very humorous moments, "Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country" hits on all points.
I highly recommend this novelization as it is an excellent addition to your Star Trek library whether you're into the novelizations or not. {ssintrepid}

The Dobe Ju/'Hoansi (Case Studies in Cultural Anthropology), by Richard B. Lee

This classic, bestselling study of the !Kung San, foragers of the Dobe area of the Kalahari Desert describes a people's reactions to the forces of modernization, detailing relatively recent changes to !Kung rituals, beliefs, social structure, marriage and kinship system. It documents their determination to take hold of their own destiny, despite exploitation of their habitat and relentless development to assert their political rights and revitalize their communities. Use of the name Ju/'hoansi (meaning "real people") acknowledges their new sense of empowerment. Since the publication of the Third Edition in 2003, Richard Lee has made eight further trips to the Kalahari, the most recent in 2010 and 2011. The Dobe and Nyae Nyae Areas have continued to transform and the people have had to respond and adapt to the pressures of capitalist economics and bureaucratic governance of the Namibian and Botswana states. This Fourth Edition chronicles and bears witness to these evolving social conditions and their impacts on lives of the Ju/'hoansi.

Summary of the ethnography
By K. Viles
Richard Lee's ethnography The Dobe Ju/'hoansi is a detailed account of the culture and history of the Ju/'hoan people living in the Dobe area of southern central Africa. The book illustrates both the rich history of the Ju and how the traditions of the past are central in the present, but also the problems facing the Ju/'hoansi as they move toward the future.
The first half of Lee's ethnography focuses mainly on the past and the "present", circa the 1960s, when Lee himself spent time living with the Ju/'hoansi, a practice known as participant observation. The first major element Lee expounds upon is the harsh environment in which the Ju live. The climate consists of very warm, rainy summers (86-104 degrees Fahrenheit) contrasted against moderate, cool winters with no rainfall at all. Because the amount of precipitation can vary as much as 500 percent (Lee 29), droughts are frequent. The severe weather patterns combined with the unforgiving Kalahari Desert influence all other parts of the Ju/'hoansi way of life.
The Ju people are classified by archeologists as hunters and gatherers, moving around multiple times per year instead of living in permanent settlements. Skilled adults can identify as many as 100 species of edible plants (Lee 43) and can "deduce many kinds of information about the animal he is tracking: its species and sex, its age, how fast it is traveling, etc" (Lee 50). The author discovered that the Ju only have to work about 20 hours per week to hunt or gather enough food to sustain the population (Lee 54). I was amazed at this statistic, having previously thought that hunting and gathering took up many more hours per week to feed an entire band.
Lee moves on in the ethnography to discuss the intricate kinship connections the Ju share. Even though groups or camps only consist of about 30 members at a time (Lee 61), they are constantly changing so that the relationships are complex and spread throughout the entire Dobe area. Individual camps are usually made up of core siblings, their spouses, any siblings of their spouses, and finally the spouses of these siblings. The overarching principle of sharing is visible through the social organization of the Ju. Name relationships and kin relationships seem to tie everyone to everyone else in this egalitarian society.
The customs surrounding marriage and sexuality are next in the book, followed by an explanation of the "complaint discourse". Both chapters are very interesting in that they reinforce the classless and equal nature of the Ju/'hoansi society. The second half of the book shifts in focus from the way things have been to how times are changing in the lives of the Ju as more organized institutes, like the states of Namibia and Botswana, encroach upon the ancient tribes.
The most significant change of the Ju culture has been from hunting and gathering to settled farming and the raising of livestock. By planting crops in one area, the mobility of the population is restricted. "It is not as easy for family members to go on an extended foraging trip or to pay visits to relatives at distant camps" (Lee 158). Other Ju/'hoan people have found new ways to make a living in mining, craft making, or well digging. These factors, as well as many other issues have had many repercussions, but the most important effect is the breakdown of sharing among the Ju, a practice and ideal that sustained the culture for hundreds of years. This shift in beliefs and social principles will definitely cause problems for the future survival of the Ju/'hoansi.

Wonderful
By Raman
I read this book while taking an undergraduate sociocultural anthropology class. Several years later, it still stands out in my mind as a crisp, fair ethnography in a field full of opaque and often pejorative books.

Richard B. Lee's accomplishment here is to balance a scientific and human approach. Realizing how strongly a physical environment can impact a culture, Lee smartly and dispassionately details the basic facts of the Ju/'Hoansi's past and current situation - the geography and ecology of their home in the Kalahari desert, their food supply, etc. On this canvas, he paints a picture of the culture of this people. This sweeps from the physical layout of their camps to their language (including a thorough exposition of those interesting click consonants) to their handling of mortality and sexuality to the privileges and "complaint discourse" of older members of the society. Then Lee qualifies this whole portrait by describing recent developments, including enroachment of other cultures, erosion of the traditional lifestyle, and the dispossession and advocacy that has defined the Ju's recent relationships with the Namibian and Botswanan governments.

What amazed me about all this is that Lee remains tenderly human during this rich exposition. He writes of the Ju with great respect and humbly describes vigniettes of his interaction with his subjects - like when he got his pet name and when he had crushes on various native women. He avoids sentimental exoticism when describing how the culture began to fall apart due to pressures on their territory from Black herders. Instead, he documents the painful transition with precision and observational detail and even finds sources of hope. For example, he connects Ju women's lower-than-average HIV infection rates with the culture's respect for women, arguing that Ju women's assertiveness make them more likely to insist on condom use. Also, rather than arguing that only the old way could be good for the Ju, Lee looks forward, advocating the Ju's integration into the larger society and adaptation of modern land-use patterns.

In this book, Richard Lee shows himself to be one of the rare anthropologists who do a good job portraying their culture of study but resist the possessive urge to lament its change and adaptation over time. For me, it recalls many happy hours reading in college, taking in the sunshine while struggling through all the click consonants. I heartily recommend it.

The Dobe Jo/'hoansi:
By D. Portannese
Richard Lee's case study examines the lives of the Ju/'hoansi culture by going to the people themselves, asking about their past, while simultaneously investigating their present. The Ju/'hoansi or "Ju" live around the Adobe water holes, in Botswana, which stretch 3,000 square miles. Nearby tribes included from Herero and Tswana, who were Bantu speakers. These tribes had a distinct appearance and an utterly unheard of way of life. Geographically, the Dobe region incorporated four types of habitats- dunes, flats, melapo, and hardpan & river valleys. There are five major seasons, and droughts occur quite frequently and mongongo is the major plant food in the Dobe area. The Ju people live in grass huts formulated in a circle, creating miniature villages. These villages are easy to set up and relocate because they change locations depending on the season. They are comprised of 5 rings; each ring represented a different function to the village in order to keep daily life smooth running. The first part of the novel conveys an idea, in which the Ju ancestors were hunter-gatherers, or foragers, and that the Europeans came to their land in attempt to colonize them. Along with the Europeans, the Tswana herders were among the first to penetrate the area, and it is said that the Ju incorporated their political system.
Throughout the book, Lee portrays accounts referring to his personal experiences in Botswana. The story that is most prominent describes how Lee took a select few of the tribe to a mongongo grove so the people could pick nuts. And they did- they pick enough food to tame the hunger of ten people for fourteen days. This is extremely significant because the action of these individuals is the quintessence of what a hunger-gatherer really is. When foragers have the resources to get as much food as they can get their hands on, they would never pass it up, because there is no certainty of when the next abundance of nutritious food will be present.
The novel stresses the message that the Ju/'hoansi were extreme believers in allocating whatever they obtained with the rest of the village. They recognized over 100 kinds of wild plants as edible, ranging from what Lee deems to be as primary, minor, major, supplementary, rare and problematic. He explains exactly why mongongo is the most common element of their diet- because it is easily found, and is highly nutritious. The most proper demeanor for a hunter is to be modest in the Ju/'hoansi tribe. Although the Ju/'hoan believe they are doing well for themselves, Westerners think differently. They insist that their society is bound to fail because of their "steady work, steady leisure and adequate diet" (58). Another social aspect of the Ju/'hoan is that they have arranged marriages, that are decided when a child is born. The villagers have the utmost respect for the elders. Groups of people, not individuals own the land in a village and there is no headman or chief among the Ju people.
In the second half of the book, we learn of the cultural alterations that the tribe experienced. When social changes developed, education became more common, however the Ju/'hoan were very suspicious of the introduction of the scholastic system. Prior to the emergence of the education system, the Ju/'hoan had no perception of geography- they were unaware that they lived on a large body of land called Africa or that the large land of water located to the West was in fact the Atlantic Ocean. The Ju/'hoan culture soon became dependant on craft making as well as the buying and selling of beer. Today, the Johan have decreased their reliance on sharing, thus increasing the level of poverty. The development of the construction of their houses changed- they were now building semi-permanent mud-walled houses. In the 1990's the government stepped in, veering development towards the right direction, and even created drought-relief programs to help supply food. The emergence of other societies to the once nomadic life-style of the Ju/'hoansi tribe, has no longer placed them in solidarity, but has introduced new aspects of culture- some being beneficial to the Johan, and others leaving their traditions behind.

The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening, 3rd Edition, by Steven G. Laitz

Beginning with music fundamentals, this text covers all the topics necessary for a thorough understanding of undergraduate music theory by focusing on music in context. The text links each of the tasks that comprise a tonal theory curriculum, explicitly connecting written theory (writing and analysis), skills (singing, playing, and dictation), and music-making outside the theory class.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES
* Presents an outstanding quality, quantity, and diversity of exercises geared toward real music and real music situations
* Explores not only standard four-voice harmony, but also other musical domains including melody, counterpoint, and a multitude of textures; the result is a text with applicability and relevance to all musicians
* Includes almost 4,500 musical examples from the common-practice repertoire in the text and workbooks, more than 90 percent of which are on the CDs included with the text and workbooks--nearly twenty hours of music on MP3 files (all music is performed, recorded, and engineered at Eastman)

Review

"The Complete Musician offers a depth of theoretical training and analytical insight that its competitors do not. It has, by far, the best musical examples of any textbook available on the market today. The exercises, which incrementally progress from easier to harder, are highly original and just plain fun to do."--Reginald Bain, University of South Carolina

"The integration of composition, analysis, aural recognition, and performance is the best feature of The Complete Musician. It subtly reinforces the idea that a musician needs an understanding of each aspect of the musical universe in order to excel in any of its specialized areas. The CompleteMusician trains music students to think like composers, which cannot help but make them better performers."--Ciro Scotto, University of South Florida

"The most comprehensive, musically intelligent, and easy-to-use music theory textbook on the market."--Stefan Eckert, University of Northern Colorado

"This title ranks among the very best of its kind. . . . If you want a thorough and approachable book that gets behind, or into the head (indeed, heart and soul) of composers whose music you've known; want to know how it works the way it does, and why; want to see the mechanics, an appreciation of which serves only to enhance your sense of admiration for their technique, then The Complete Musician can be recommended wholeheartedly."--Review from Classical.net

As another reviewer also commented, the book has quite a lot of errors. Several paragraphs and diagrams are ambiguous or confusing and can only be deciphered by consulting external sources, which makes this book very frustrating to read. The author strangely didn't choose to move basic material either entirely to the appendices or to cover it completely within the main chapters.

Previously a textbook rental volume. It's in excellent condition. A great value.
By Dan J
I'm coming mid-way into a music theory sequence, having just transferred universities. I was very pleased to find the book the class is using, the previous edition of a widely used music theory text. The volume was previously a textbook rental, at a very good price. I was a little concerned about the status of the book. However, the description was accurate. The pages are clean and the binding very sound. It's in essentially "new" condition. I'm very pleased.

Get the 3rd edition!
By Oliver
It's a nice book to learn music theory. Everything is very detailed in the book. We use this book as taxt book in Davis. Although this is a used one, it watchable and not bad at all. There is nothing major changes between the newest edition and this one, but this one is a lot cheaper. So get the third edition!

From the Inside Flap
Preface

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Over the last sixty years, Technical Drawing has taught well over a million students the practices and techniques of graphical communication. Both instructors and their students have come to depend on this text as the authority on the subject, and most students have used this book as a professional reference long after they have finished taking this course. Why has this book been so successful? First, the main goal of the text has always been to explain each principle so clearly that the student is certain to understand it, and to make the text interesting enough to encourage all students to read and study on their own. Second, this book has also had what are unquestionably the best, most detailed, and accurate set of drawings on the market. A student skilled with this book's drawings will have a full repertoire of graphical skills in his or her hands. Lastly, Technical Drawing continually has sought to address the new technologies and the skills that constantly change this field. By doing so, this text prepares students to enter the marketplace and face the challenges of a rapidly changing playing field.

THE ELEVENTH EDITION

The Eleventh Edition of Technical Drawing continues to offer the best coverage of basic graphics principles available. Edition after edition, this text serves as the authoritative source on the subject. With this new version, we have acted upon the requests of over 30 reviewers to improve certain aspects of the book while preserving its core presentation. In particular, this new volume features:

Greatly increased coverage of the design process in Chapter 14. This chapter now includes coverage of 3D solid modeling, and parametric or constraint-based modeling. Thoroughly revised chapter on manufacturing processes. We especially thank Professor Serope Kalpakjian of the Illinois Institute of Technology and the author of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology for his assistance with this chapter. Over 50 brand new questions /problems. These problems feature parts that come from a variety of industries. Material on Instrumental Drawing and Lettering condensed to one chapter. New coverage of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Extensive updating of text graphics to comply to most recent ANSI standards. New "Graphics Spotlights" feature that highlights a particular use of graphics in industry. A decrease in the overall size of the book. Instructors have told us that students are finding books too large. However, they want their students to have access to important reference material. To achieve both these goals, we have eliminated the chapters on Graphs and Diagrams and Alignment Charts included in the last edition, and included them in Adobe pdf format on a free CD. This CD also contains over 30 animations of graphics concepts. Updated web site http-//prenhall /giesecke now includes even more questions for review, as well as a new feature available for January of 2000 that lets professors create their own on-line syllabus. Using a simple interface, instructors build a graphic assignment list and use it to interact with their class over the web. This site also features links to other graphics related areas, a selection of animations available for class instruction or student review, an exploration of VRML technology, a case studies exploring how graphics communication is handled at an engineering company, and more. This site will be a constant resource to help instructors and students remain as current as possible. Eight -Page Color Insert. To give students a feel for how color is often used in CAD software and other technological processes, but without overloading and obscuring the book's core content, we have included an eight-page color insert.

SUPPLEMENTS

INSTRUCTOR'S MANUAL WITH SOLUTIONS/RESOURCE CD

This new manual prepared by Tom Kane of Pueblo Community College includes outlines, teaching tips, extra quiz questions, and other tools designed to aid in class preparation. By Joey Tilelli
This rating doesn't have anything to do with the book - it came in great condition - my problem was I ordered two books and only got one. Understanding things can get mixed up in transit (or whatever), I waited a month or so before sending an email asking about the book. I was hoping to get a quick response but never got one (I think?). It is what it is. Anyway, this is an awesome book for anybody looking for an introduction to drafting standards/methods; I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about a starting position in the technical/mechanical drafting field. The book offers a lot of great visualization exercises that involve different follow-along practice methods for complex modeling.

Not real happy
By Mike M
The book arrived on time and for that I have no problem, the shipping service worked great. My unhappyness results from the book not being complete. During a recent classroom session we were directed to turn to the appendix, imagine my dismay when the appendix was not in the book. A further review of the book revealed several of the photos were not present and in place of the photo "FPO" in place of the graphics.

Excellent text for technical drawing
By Julian Gardner
This book is an excellent reference for anyone needing an introduction to or a reference for technical drawing. Most of the content concerning machine component drawings are geared (no pun intended) more toward traditional methods for technical drawings (i.e. compass, ruler and pencil), but the methods given are well suited to modern computer-oriented methods of solid modeling. Engineers in the manufacturing industry will find it especially useful, as it can be a helpful reference for weldment drawings.

This is like handing someone a slide rule and saying "figure it ...
By Amazon Customer
The book isn't a guide. It doesn't explain. It simply declares statistical formulas, followed by a bit of example. For example, on p. 22, to calculate the standard deviation, use the square of the distance. Why? Why the square? Why not cube it? Why not multiply by 37 and divide by 7?

This is like handing someone a slide rule and saying "figure it out". Yes, eventually, one could figure it out. But why not explain it?

The cartoons are cute but mostly either meaningless or distracting. They don't illustrate the points in the text.

Finally, on a deeper level, the book covers mostly trivial or irrelevant topics. Frankly, who cares about dice? I don't want to learn to gamble in Las Vegas. I want to learn how to use statistics in my work. I'd like a explanatory guide to practical statistics that can be used for biology, business, manufacturing, and other similar fields.

If you know of such a book, please say so here (and let me know: andreas@andreas.com). Or I may have to write it myself :-)

Perfect for me - probably not for everyone
By A. Bracewell
I'm in love with this book and I feel like it was written with me in mind, so if your math background and goals are anything like mine, I can't recommend it enough.

So, here's my deal: I'm a med student and am about to start a bio statistics course. I wanted to brush up on stat ahead of time over spring break, but I knew I'd never bring myself to read a serious stat book on the beach (especially having ADD). I've never taken a stat course, but my math education got as far as calculus many years ago, and I teach SAT math so I'm not too rusty on algebra. I'm also a general-purpose science nerd and feel pretty comfortable with the fundamentals of probability.

Most of the chapters started out reviewing things I already knew - for example, one of the first chapters goes over the definitions of mean and median and how to calculate them - none of which was news to me. (Ironically, even though the author probably ought to include such basic concepts for the sake of completeness, anyone who doesn't already understand how to calculate an average is probably going to find this book too advanced). But the chapter then went on to explain how to calculate standard deviations and other more advanced concepts I'd long since forgotten at a pretty ideal level.

So, at my present math-nerd rank, some of the book was skimmable review, and most of it was exactly what I was hoping to learn presented in a way that was neither dumbed-down nor confusing.

I was afraid that the gimicky nature of a cartoon math text might go along with sloppy pedagogy, but it's exactly the opposite. I feel like a lot of thought was put into presenting the material in the most logical way possible. It's also ideal for visual learners like myself, since every concept is shown as a picture or graph, sometimes in multiple ways. And, of course, the cartoons make it fun to read. Don't expect the jokes to be hilarious, but they're cute enough to keep my attention, and that's HUGE.

Now, here's who I think shouldn't buy this book: I think if you're a serious math geek you're going to find this book too slow. (On the other hand, a serious math geek probably wouldn't buy a cartoon math book anyway...) While it might be useful to a geek who's just forgotten an equation or two, you'd have to wade through a lot of cutesy stuff to find a specific bit of info.

I also think you shouldn't buy this book if you're a total math-a-phobe. The book assumes a fair amount of math background, and uses scary greek letters. If you're up for a challenge, I think almost anyone can get some use from the book, but if your math skills are really lacking, you'll have to be brave when reading it. It's not going to hold your hand. This book plus a patient math-geek friend to fill in the gaps might get you through, though. I hate to discourage anyone from buying this book, since I think it does such a fantastic job - but you should have fair warning that it does go into moderately advanced concepts.

In short, this is a book for nerds who think math is kinda cool, are already comfortable with the basic concepts of probability, and are looking for a serious but fun crash-course in statistics. It's also ideal for visual learners and those who find it difficult to force themselves to read prose-heavy texts.

I personally feel like I'm going to rock my bio stat class thanks to this book, and I seriously enjoyed reading it.

Very imbalanced book
By Hal Helms
The cartoons are cute and all -- and they are helpful -- but they seem more like illustrations added to an already-written book. I found a better book was "naked statistics". Although missing the neat cartoons, the text actually did a much better job of simplifying statistics and making them more relevant.

One more thing I think could have helped the book was exercises to go through to assure the reader that they were understanding what they were reading.
