About the Author
Marianne Gilbert is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Materials at Loughborough University, United Kingdom. Marianne obtained a BSc in Applied Chemistry from Aston University, followed by 18 months at Dunlop Research Department. She then returned to Aston to study for a PhD in Polymer Chemistry which was awarded in 1970. Marianne became a Lecturer in the Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering at Loughborough in 1970 and was subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor. She spent two years as Acting Head of Department then six years as Head of Department from 1994 - 2000. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and received that Institute’s Swinburne Award. She retired at the end of 2013.

The is an expanded version of My Only Son which was released in 1997. Mr. Gambino is working on the sequel. A romance novel "A Passionate Kiss" is due out December 2004. He has also written 3 childrens book due out also in December 2004.

In the first three chapters, you will meet Vinny Denucci the son of the most powerful crime boss in New York City. Vinny had been isolated from his father’s work while growing up because his uncle was to be the successor. On his twenty-first birthday, Vinny’s father tells him that he must abandon his plans to become a lawyer and instead replace his uncle and become the new successor. "In the real world it is forbidden to have your son become a "made man". It is against the rules." Reluctantly, Vinny participates in his assigned birthday ritual, which requires him to kill a disloyal family member. As a "made man" and the family successor, Vinny must watch his father’s organization while his father takes care of a "business" problem in Florida. When his father is gone, Vinny slowly transforms from a man who must morally justify his actions into a man who, because he cannot trust his acquaintances or even his father, becomes more callous, paranoid, and impulsive. He comes to learn the true nature and consequences of being part of the Mafia and understands why his mother warned him to be strong and resist the lure of "easy" money and power.

About the Author
Christopher J. Gambino was born and raised in Queens, New York. My Only Son is his first novel. He who has traveled this road could only have created a compelling story of this genre. Christopher Gambino has traveled the road from New York City to Boca Raton, Florida and on the way became the combination of streetwise and elegant gentleman. The first chapters of “My Only Son” were written in two weeks. Gambino’s inspiration was unforeseen and unanticipated. He didn’t realize he was an author until he received a sudden intuitive light, which impressed itself upon him with an irresistible clearness and force that allowed the words to vividly flow through him to become the compassionate and desperate story of Vincenzo Denucci. Mr. Gambino is presently writing a second novel addressing the last “CLICK” of Vinny’s gun. Does God forsake the truly repentant? Is our prison system capable of real reform? What about our justice system? People ask if “My Only Son” is an autobiography. No, it is not. Rather let us say that it is a catharsis, which became and has left an indelible impression. It is said, that religion is a dedication to the highest value one knows. Christopher Joseph Gambino is a highly inspired, creative author and spiritual man. Christopher Gambino came from humble beginnings and some difficult life experiences, which provided the inspiration for his first novel. Although he has never had any formal training, Mr. Gambino successfully taught himself the art of the novel. "My only Son", is the story of Vinny Denucci, the son of Sonny Denucci, the head of a New York organized crime family and the " Boss of Bosses" of the five (5) Mafia families of New York. The story begins when Vinny is fourteen (14), a naive, intelligent, good-natured boy, who does not fully understand what his father does for a living. Vinny has dreams of becoming a lawyer when he reaches adulthood. Sonny is a ruthless crime lord, who wants his only son to be his successor as head of the crime family. Felicia, Vinny's mother, is a strong willed individual who has grown tired of living the life of a crime boss's wife, and wants her son, with whom she is extremely close, to follow his dreams to a life outside the family.
Sonny is so outraged and threatened by Felicia's interference with his plans for Vinny that he takes Felicia's life, and with the help of a crooked New York Detective, is able to cover up his horrible crime. With Felicia out of the way, Sonny drags Vinny into the life he and Felicia so vehemently wanted him to avoid. This story, through its many twists and turns, traces the life of Vinny as he is initiated into the family, becomes a " mobster", and eventually winds up in prison.
While Vinny is in prison his grandmother Gina, Felicia's mother, is approached by an FBI Agent Rick Carr, who tells her that Felicia's death was not natural, as had been reported, and that he suspects Sonny was involved with her death. Once Gina relates this information to Vinny upon his release from prison, he makes the life altering decision to work with the FBI to try to bring down his Father's empire, in order to avenge his beloved mother's death. The story culminates in a heart stopping confrontation between Vinny and Sonny that will have the readers on the edge of their seats.

Stephen K. Harrel, DDS, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and maintained a private practice limited to periodontics in Dallas, Texas for over thirty years.  He is also President of Texas Medical and Dental Designs LLC, and an adjunct professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Harrel’s research has been in minimally invasive periodontal therapy, occlusion and periodontal disease, periodontal treatment outcomes, and infection control. He has contributed chapters to textbooks and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Harrel lectures throughout the U.S.

Thomas G. Wilson, Jr., DDS, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and has a private practice limited to periodontics in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Wilson has lectured extensively on a national and international level and is the author of numerous professional publications and books on periodontics and implant dentistry. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio Dental School and Baylor University College of Dentistry and has served as editor-in-chief of an international dental journal and associate editor of the Journal of Periodontology.

About the Author
James Turk and John Rubino are the co-authors of The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How To Profit From It: Make a Fortune by Investing in Gold and Other Hard Assets (Doubleday, 2004). James Turk is the founder and a director of GoldMoney, a Jersey, Channel Islands company and a leader in online gold trading. He is also a director of the GoldMoney Foundation, a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to providing information on sound money. After beginning his business career with The Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase), he went onto manage the Commodity Department of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, that country’s sovereign wealth fund. He is the author of several monographs and numerous articles on money and banking. He and his wife live in London, England. John Rubino runs DollarCollapse.com, a popular financial website, and contributes regularly to CFA Magazine. His previous books include Clean Money: Picking Winners in the Green-Tech Boom (Wiley, 2008), How to Profit from the Coming Real Estate Bust (Rodale, 2003) and Main Street, Not Wall Street (Morrow, 1998). Conversational tone, but packed with information

A very readable book, especially considering how much material it covers.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I explains what a precarious situation the Western financial world is really in, due to “papering over” crisis after crisis with increasing amounts of debt and fiat currency, yet without actually fixing anything. If you’re fairly new to this, Part I will alert you to some major risks (but in plain, rather than alarmist, language). If you’re already somewhat worried, you’ll wish you could make your friends and relatives sit down and read this section, because it lays out the dangers nicely.

Part II explains some of the consequences of all this unfettered debt and currency creation, which go beyond what’s traditionally thought of as economics. There’s the burden of inflation (largely hidden and denied), and the perils of rising interest rates, both of which are well described. But it also discusses increased corruption, an ever-expanding (because easily funded) military-surveillance state, manipulated markets and a resultant loss of trust, and a level of societal complexity which is not sustainable and will end unpredictably (but badly). That’s just a partial list. People who think they’re not interested in economics might be a lot more interested if they understood how “easy money” plays into many of the issues they care about.

Part III highlights some of the features of our slightly bizarre financial system, necessary knowledge for understanding how to protect oneself. It covers open secrets which are easily understood but which much of the public is woefully unaware of: the way fractional reserve banking actually works, the amount of power unelected central bankers wield, and why inflation is a hidden tax that people don’t realize they’re paying. Understanding the unfairness of the financial system makes you want to distance yourself from it, which leads to Part IV, the “what you can do to prepare” section.

Part IV involves, in part, bullish arguments for gold and silver, and there might be some skeptics who’ve grown impatient with precious metals. If you’re in that crowd, this part of the book is an excellent reminder of what the fundamentals really are, which it might be helpful to revisit. The impatient would also benefit from reading the introduction to the book, which gives a good explanation for why the financial breakdown that history dictates has not happened yet.

It should be a useful book for people at different levels of knowledge, from someone just learning about money & economics to someone who knows a lot, but might love to have some clearly outlined talking points to bring to friends and relatives.

A good book, unusually well written, but little new helpful advice

I'm contributing this because I have benefitted a great deal from other people's book reviews. This is an extremely well written discussion concerning the historical and well as current events in the financial and monetary world. Most of this was in the last book, and also available on the internet. However, it all becomes a very academic exercise if there is no good solution. The disappointing part is that there is precious little usable new information concerning what a person can do to protect themselves. I would have hoped at this late date we would have more concrete guidance on how to mitigate the possible damage. There are too many authors that consider the solution to a risky situation to be doing something that is even more risky to counter it. Great, if your timing is perfect. But if you are that good at timing markets, you are probably going to do OK anyway. The other thing is while I think that you can have somewhat of a handle on the economic situation the political / legal situation is the wild card and we need to know more about this factor. Finally, there is the time factor. Yes, the sun will eventually go supernova, but it may not do that for quite a while, if you get my drift. Meanwhile, life happens. In particular a more balanced view to the investing approaches might be useful, including more of a discussion concerning possible disadvantages.

I would recommend the book to anyone who is not yet familiar with this subject, or who hasn't read the previous book. It might make a good gift.

Enlightening with a leap to the fanciful

I greatly enjoyed the book. It was well written, entertaining, informative and thought provoking...but I have a hard time believing the authors' vision of the next ten years.

Yes we are in debt up to our eyeballs, yes we are printing money like mad, yes governments lie about statistics and other things...but I'm not sure it is going to lead to the crack-up boom as described and I'm not sure catastrophic collapse is a possibility within the next few years or so.

The chapter on how the most basic US government statistics of unemployment and inflation were understated was fascinating. I knew about them, but the implications were not clear until this book.

The segment on how the gold market was manipulated was well written and I had never heard of it until this book, frankly. That was eye opening.

Fractional reserved banking was a mortal sin in this book as was central banking in general. Von Mises, Rothbard, Ron Paul et al were weaved throughout the pages. I don't quite buy into their black and white view of the world. Yes I want smaller and more efficient government and yes I want the Constitution to drive many decisions politically. But the Constitution was made by men and wasn't perfect (remember 3/5ths).

That said, when you predict the end of an era---in this case a dollar denominated one---there are times when I thought the authors went overboard. The Epilogue reads like an Ayn Rand novel to me. No, I don't think precious metals will lead us to smaller banks and the end of our military empire.

Interestingly, the main purpose of the book was to provide investment advice. All the material discussed above was primer for understanding how to get wealthy during the coming collapse of the dollar. Unload your bonds, sell volatility, selectively short the market and of course buy gold and silver. Maybe, but I remain unconvinced.

I recommend the book, but you determine for yourself whether you want to go their route or not.

I chose this rating of a book because it sounded really good. Not only that I sometimes think that my dad is a loser. I liked everything about this book. Great illustrations helpful in developing a framework for learning medical embryology

As a first year med student coming from a non-bio background, embryology was a relatively foreign subject to me in the beginning of the year. I chose this book based on the many useful drawings which I think illustrate concepts well. The art style is consistent throughout the book -- which I like -- and because of the level of continuity, the illustrations and captions alone have been great for learning the basics. The text seems detailed enough to use as a reference as well but is likely to be overwhelming for review purposes. The paper quality is EXCELLENT, with thick glossy pages.

Impressions / comparisons to other highly-regarded resources:
- Langman's is packed with medically-relevant details while text is a lot more concise. Not as many pictures.
- Carlson's Human Embryology and Developmental Biology seems to place a greater emphasis on the biochemical basis of development, i.e. the factors / chemicals driving developmental changes.

A great improvement
By recent MD
This book is a vast improvement over the 3rd edition written mostly by Larsen and completed by others. It makes the study of embryology, well, not enjoyable, but at least painless. The authors have corrected previous editorial blunders like missing colors, but they didn't catch them all, like the missing heart outline in the last image of the systemic venous system. Other image improvements are the addition of more labeled components of images carried over from the 3rd edition; still not enough in some cases, though. Pointless images have been removed, mostly SEMs. The heart chapter has been completely rewritten, with diagrams that make a previously obscure exposition readable. Embryonic folding, always a tough read, has been split to the gastrointestinal, body cavity, and week 4 chapters, which makes more sense. Molecular and clinical information is spread throughout each chapter at appropriate places, instead of being lumped together at the end, and of course, it's all up to date (well, for 2008). There are several new well-written and illustrated chapters.

The book retains the reversed definitions of the aorticorenal and superior mesenteric ganglia, despite the fact that both are correctly labeled in the (identical) diagrams of the two editions. Supporting evidence that no one actually proofread this section is that, like the previous edition, "superior mesenteric ganglia" is not in bold font, as are the other two ganglia. This error would have been corrected were it not for the second most annoying practice of this publisher, which is their refusal to post errata for any textbook or to give readers a way to report errors to them. The preface to this edition has an email address for one of the authors whom I have advised of the ganglia error. (The most annoying practice is their gobbling up of a large fraction of screen real estate with their pretentious logo, titling, menus, buttons, and other nonsense, in the studentconsult online version of the book. And they are not interested in hearing from you about it. But all that is moot, because studentconsult is a complete farce, including animations which confuse more than elucidate.)

One may also wonder why, when editorial practice in recent years has been to replace eponymous nomenclature with functional terms, the authors chose to replace "paramesonephric duct" with "Müllerian duct". And they kept the word "anlage", which hasn't been spoken by man or beast in decades. In a short section of the Introduction entitled "Phases of Human Embryology", the word 'purpose' is used seven times. This is an affront to the scientifically enlightened (does not include most med students), because it promotes the notion of teleology, which, unless you're a member of the Flat Earth Society, is bullbleep. Subliminal messages, possibly unintended, inculcate incorrect notions in the naive reader, and can adversely affect clinical practice. I recommend that all words suggestive of teleology be excised for the next edition. For starters, replace 'purpose' with 'effect'.

All that aside, this is probably the best embryo book on the market for the serious medical student or resident. Those who only want to memorize answers for Step 1 should find something simpler, like a dime-thin USMLE review book that drills on answers with no pretense of teaching anything. Such comic book level reviews, however, will not even approximate in number the cornucopia of pathologies in Larsen's.

Ideal Embryology textbook

This is a great book. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand what is being explained. The graphics are great and helpful to visualize concepts and stages of development. It's paperback and light weight, which helps when you have to carry it around in a backpack. The only con is that the animations on the website are very short, some less than 30 seconds, with no text or audio explanation of what is being shown.

Smart and Succinct Scripts for your job search

It's great to have smart, succinct resources like this gem from Miriam Salpeter and Laura Labovich. I borrowed it from the library, and I'm afraid it will just be renewed time after time. For an older job hunter like myself, the material on making Twitter and Linked In work is especially on point.

This is a book you can keep going back to for quick references, depending on where you are in your process. I especially like that there are two tables of contents - the traditional chapter version, and then a "scripts by chapter" that helps you find what you're looking for fast.
