Revolutionary Social Transformation: Democratic Hopes, Political Possibilities and Critical Education, by Paula Allman

Revolutionary Social Transformation focuses on the visions and analysis culled from the writings of Karl Marx, Paulo Freire, and Antonio Gramsci. Marx's theory of critical praxis and his dialectical conceptualization of capitalism are discussed together with Freire's and Gramsci's ideas. The author suggests that these are necessary ingredients for authentic social transformation as well as a basis for rekindling hope for a veritable democratic future.

The author employs both a language of critique and a language of possibility to argue that the process of social transformation must be inherently educational. Social transformation begins in prefigurative, preparatory projects and continues even after the creation of a new social formation. She also argues that Marx's materialist theory of consciousness--his theory of critical praxis--informs the thinking of both Freire and Gramsci. The ideas of Freire and Gramsci together with Marx's dialectical conceptualization of capitalism provide essential ingredients for the type of critical theory of educational praxis necessary for authentic social transformation. These ingredients also indicate how local transformative efforts can be linked to the global project for social transformation and ultimately the ending of all oppression.

Review
“...provides an important addition to the libraries of educators wishing to advance their rudimentary understanding of Marx, Freire, and Gramsci.”–Interchange

“...the text may be useful to those not yet familiar with the power, breadth and vision of Marx's analysis.”–Philosophy in Review

“...Paula Allman's book is a tour de force. It is rigorous, it provides deep knowledge of Marx, Gramsci, and Freire, and it is inspiring in the use of these three figures' ideas to promote radically democratic social relations.”–The Adult Education Quarterly

“This is a well-argued book containing a radical analysis of injustice and how we must organize ourselves collectively to eradicate it. It emphasizes that we need both consciousness and education if we are to work for transformation rather than reform. A thoughtful new presentation of Marxist ideas based upon the author's own experience in education, emphasizing the importance of the struggles that lie ahead.”–Right Honorable Tony Benn MP (House of Commons, London)

“A welcome and timely antidote to the ludic temporising of much fashionable 'postmodern theorising' about education for social change in today's world....It shows us how to be strategic about our visions and visionary about our strategies.”–Ian S. Martin, Senior Lecturer Department of Community Education, University of Edinburgh

“What Paula Allman does - systematically, authoritatively and, in my opinion, triumphantly - is to reinsert Marxist theory at the heart of the contemporary debate about radical education. A detailed reading of Marx, Gramsci, and Freire and of their contribution to revolutionary transformation. Allman, as ever, is principled and hopeful.”–Jane Thompson National Organisation for Adult Learning (NIACE) UK

Revolutionary Educational Theory/Pedagogy/Praxis Unplugged
By Dr. Glenn Rikowski
Paula Allman's 'Revolutionary Social Transformation' (RST) is one of the most interesting and important books on education for our time. Allman's RST provides a kick-start to Marxist educational theory and pedagogy by setting out from Marx. She puts Marx back into Marxist educational theory. Her analysis of fundamental concepts in Marx's 'Capital' and the 'Grundrisse' - such as value and abstract labour - would put many a Marxist economist to shame.
In the introductory first chapter, Allman notes the escalating social divisions and horrific social injustices in contemporary global capitalism. She views RST as being a contribution towards developing an effective collective challenge to this situation. Thoroughgoing social transformation - nothing less - is necessary to end poverty and injustice, argues Allman. Social transformation involves individuals transforming themselves in the process of collectively transforming society. Education is a crucial element of this process. As radical/critical educators 'we will need a rigorously critical theory to guide and critique our action, our interventions', notes Allman. RST seeks to provide such a guide and basis for critique - and the ideas of Karl Marx, Paulo Freire and Antonio Gramsci provide the intellectual framework.
In chapter two, Allman provides a vision of life beyond capitalist society (though it is a vision rooted in capitalism - hence it is not Utopian). The vision seeks to provide glimpses of humanized social life; humanity unconstrained by capitalist social relations. Allman notes that without a rudimentary vision that peers beyond life in capitalist society, social transformation is likely to be a non-starter. She encourages us all to think beyond capitalism on the basis of its real limits. Allman shows how Marx's discussions of socialism can aid us to think beyond the confines of the social universe of capital.
By itself, vision changes nothing. The key point is how critical consciousness aimed at abolishing oppressive social relations can be generated. Allman turns to Marx's theory of consciousness at this point. This is the focus of chapter 3, where she explores Marx's revolutionary theory of consciousness. She explains this theory with crystal clarity, along with the nature of Marx's materialism and then provides an account of capitalist social relations. For those who have not engaged with Marx's work before, this chapter is an invaluable guide on these topics. For those those who have read Marx, Allman's fourth challenge in this chapter - to explain how Marx thought - is particularly rewarding. To be able to grasp the form of Marx's thought enables us to develop 'critical, socialist and eventually revolutionary praxis' (the revolutionary theory of consciousness): action combined with critical consciousness that opens up avenues for socialist change.
Chapter 4 focuses on Marx's mode of concetualizing. Allman explores in more detail Marx's revolutionary/transformative praxis. The importance of this is that 'we have to develop a critical, a dialectical, understadning of our present conditions', argues Allman, in order to gain a deeper understanding of what needs to be transformed and how to set about it. Allman then turns to Marx's method of analysis. For me, this was the highlight of the book. Basically, she shows how Marx thought critically about capitalist society and goes on to illustrate how this mode of thinking can then be turned onto any aspect of capitalist society, and its conflict-ridden social relations exposed.
The fifth chapter explores aspects of capitalist education. Allman shows the power and significance of the ideas of Antonio Gransci and Paulo Freire. This chapter is full of insights on their politics, projects and pedagogies. Allman stresses that the writings, politics and lives of both Freire and Gramsci owe a huge debt to Marx. She also notes how many have attempted to domesticate Freire and Gramsci - to take some of their ideas and 'apply' them without regard to the underpinning revolutionary/transformative praxis shared by both men. When this occurs, pedagogies seemingly inspired by Freire and Gramsci become tame: they degenerate into a normalizing 'limited/reproductive praxis' which supports capitalist social relations. As Allman demonstrates, for both Freire and Gramsci the relationship between the revolutionist/educator and the people was crucial. The goal for revolutionary educators is to enable workers to think clearly about the nature of society in order to change it. Providing them with conceptual tools to engage in critical cultural action is essential for the realization of this goal.
In chapter 6, Allman examines the concepts of democracy, truth and equality. In each case she shows how they are limited within capitalist society. For each, she offers a way forward out of contemporary crises surrounding these concepts. Her discussion of 'truth' (which she rescues from postmodernism) is especially significant: she delivers four types of truth that can start to challenge current bourgeois conceptions.
The final chapter argues that revolutionary educators need visions and passions in tandem with critcal analysis of capitalist society. That we bring these together, argues Allman, is a precondition for revolutionary social transformation.
These are exciting times for those engaged in revolutionary educational theory and pedagogy. Let's face it: as far as texts on Marxist, socialist, radical and revolutionary education and pedagogy are concerned, the last twenty years have been pretty dull and dispiriting. In the space of the last six months two trailblazing books on Marxist educational theory and revolutionary pedagogy have emerged: Allman's RST and Peter McLaren's 'Che Guevara, Paulo Friere, and the Pedagogy of Revolution' (2000). These are five star books!
Paula Allman writes with precision and passion - and she welds these together on the basis of a rigorous and clear exposition of Marx's writings. Students (and also teachers) who have never read Marx before will find Allman's chapters 2-4 a great primer. 'Revolutionary Social Transformation' has unplugged Marxist educational theory and revolutionary pedagogy. The significance of this will become increasingly clear as the crises within capitalist education and society unfold. Paula Allman's book points towards a way out of these crises.
