Excellent teaching & learning tool
By D. Roberts
Fretboard Mastery is an excellent book for any guitar teacher looking for a great text to use when working with students. It's perfect for helping in building a progressive, organized curriculum, especially when used in conjunction with a couple other books on theory (such as Edly's Music Theory for Practical People and The Everything Music Theory Book. After all, Fretboard Mastery covers a lot, but it doesn't cover everything that you'll want to have in your tool box when dealing with a wide variety of students. It's excellent for rock and metal genres, although you will want to cover other theory ideas and techniques as well. As for classical and jazz harmony and melody, you will definitely need to go beyond the pages of this book.
I've been learning from Troy Stetina's books since I first started playing (oh, so long ago), starting with Heavy Metal Guitar Tricks (back when it was first published), and moving right through the rhythm and lead books to the present publications. I've always found his books to be the best instructional ones on the market for the aspiring rock and metal guitarist, although nothing can compare to a college level music education and some formal lessons (everyone setting out on an expedition needs a sherpa until they can find their way on their own).
While Fretboard Mastery is considered by Stetina to be a companion to Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar, I tend to think it's actually more of a natural companion to Total Rock Guitar, which applies rhythm, riffing, arpeggiations, chord progressions, melodies, and leads much more comprehensively and extensively than the shred-oriented Speed Mechanics (and this is coming from a shred-oriented guitarist). I think those two books complement one another perfectly. While one gives you the strong foundation in fundamentals (Fretboard Mastery), the other takes you through rock, pop, and metal genres while applying those fundamentals (Total Rock Guitar). Also, total rock guitar introduces many things that Fretboard Mastery doesn't cover or only touches briefly, and all in the context of contemporary compositions in multiple styles.
Fretboard Mastery initially concentrates heavily on ear-training which is ultra-important to any student who wants to really hear the music and translate it to their fingers, helping to open up the fretboard to composing and transposing. Anyone who goes for a formal education is required to take four semesters of Aural Skills classes, and not without good reason; a well-developed ear is critical to a seasoned musician. The ear-training addresses notes, intervals, scales, melodies, and harmony.
Major and minor scales are covered in one octave, two octaves, positions, single-strings, horizontally, and also what Stetina refers to a hexatonic scale "chunking," an excellent tool, not only for speedy shred noodling, but also for the dynamics of moving through positions on the fretboard as a vehicle from point A to point B or for repeating riffs, licks, or melodies while moving them through the octaves.
Major and minor scales are harmonized, as are the modes. The harmonic minor, phrygian dominant, blues, pentatonics, and even melodic minor (albeit briefly on the latter) are addressed. Major, minor, full- and half-diminished, augmented, and the various seventh chords are introduced. By the end of the book, some basic extended and altered chords are added to the repertoire, as are the diminished and whole tone scales.
Two excellent----and important----concepts that are introduced are resolutions, a little bit of voice leading (briefly), and modal mixture. These are too often understated or overlooked (or unexplained!!) in most books, so it's wonderful to see them addressed here. Cadences are also presented. I think I even spotted some reference to secondary dominants (V/x).
Before the book is finished, some exotic scales are listed and there's a nice introduction to outside playing (my favorite), with some examples from Stetina's Exottica release. His original tune Sunrise is also transcribed in its entirety.
All in all, there is a vast wealth of information contained within these pages, ready to mined by any ambitious student willing to dedicate the time and effort to the task; the benefits will be immense to anyone who does. It's an excellent book for guitar teachers to use with beginning and intermediate students...even advanced students who might show some weaknesses in particular areas (perhaps ear development). I think anyone who uses this along with Total Rock Guitar will be able to take their playing to completely new heights. Even better, using Fretboard Mastery with the entire Stetina series will be like a college course in metal and rock guitar proficiency.

By Far the Best Book on Guitar Playing I Own
By Denise R. Parsley
Yea, I know: everyone will tell about how such and such book is the best book on guitar playing or this that and the other will turn you into a guitar god. Well, be prepared to hear someone else tell you the same thing but really mean it: this is the absolutely the best book on playing guitar that you can buy.
This book focuses MUCH more on music theory than any other of Stetina's previous books, and it's obvious right from the introduction of the book that this man knows what he's talking about.
The book is broken down into five sections each covering several different things such as recognizing intervals by ear (absolutely essential), arpeggios (some of which get really, really advanced), a crazy amount of scales and exercises to help memorize them, chord resolution (something more books need to cover), and lots of tips on soloing.
You can find some of these topics discussed in other books, but I really found that this was the best compendium of theory that you can find.
Another great thing is that this book puts a lot of emphasis on developing your ear which is usually either only briefly mentioned in other books or not discussed at all.
One word of warning though: this is definitely not a book for beginners.
I'd recommend that you'd have at least a year of practice before you picked this book up because not only does this book ramp up in complexity fairly quickly (you're right into modes of harmonic minor by the second chapter), but the examples given in the book can be quite complex too.
For instance, an example given for a cascading set of V chords is Paganini's 5th Caprice. Go do a search for "Paganini's 5th Caprice"
and "Jason Becker" on Youtube. Yes, an example given in this book is an excerpt from THAT. You might want to pick up "Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar" first before you pick this book up (which is the second best book and playing guitar, in my opinion).
Despite the mechanical difficulty of some of the examples (I'm looking at you Example 84...), this book is by far the best purchase I've made regarding my hobby of rocking since I bought my Les Paul.

A phenominal teacher!
By PubDragon
For starters, let me assure you, there is NO ONE out there more musically hopeless than me! I used to think some of those method books were just B-grade rejects from the science fiction section. (A Dominat 7th chord? Man, you're just makin' up chords now!) I bought tons of books on scales, licks, methods, theory ... you name it. I tried to work through them, but they just never made any sense. But when I stumbled onto Fretboard Mastery, I finally had that "A-ha!" moment. (By that, I meant to evoke the image of the lightbulb clicking on. My apologies to those upon whom I inflicted flashbacks of that vile eighties band.)
I think the truth with most teachers is that teaching is not their passion. They know the subject matter already, and they want to get right to the more nuanced material, the things that are still interesting to THEM. While that is great for advanced students, the rookies get left behind because the teacher doesn't want to be held back to the student's level. And I think that is the key to Troy's success - he is able to relate to the new student. It's like he has never forgotten what it was like when he was still learning the basics.
All of the illustrations in the book are accompanied by explanations that are precise and well-expressed. Chord diagrams that I always mistook for Egyptian Hieroglyphics, actually make sense. I can finally see how the pieces fit together. And while I am still a long way from true fretboard mastery, I can at least see the big picture from where I am now, and I finally have a roadmap to the destination. For the first time, I can see real progress.
In short, buy this book! And anything else that Troy Stetina writes (I have them all, and there isn't a bad one in the bunch). He is a truly gifted musician and teacher. You will find the presentation thorough, well-explained and digestable. In my opinion, no one does it better. This book has made a HUGE difference in my playing. And if it worked for me, it can't NOT work for you!
Thanks a million Troy! Now if I could just convince you to write one of these for the BLUES ...
