About the Author

THOMAS W. MILLER is faculty director of the Predictive Analytics program at Northwestern University. He has designed courses for the program, including Marketing Analytics, Advanced Modeling Techniques, Data Visualization, Web and Network Data Science, and the capstone course. He has taught extensively in the program and works with more than forty other faculty members in delivering training in predictive analytics and data science.

 

Miller is co-founder and director of product development at ToutBay, a publisher and distributor of data science applications. He has consulted widely in the areas of retail site selection, product positioning, segmentation, and pricing in competitive markets, and has worked with predictive models for over 30 years. Miller’s books include Data and Text Mining: A Business Applications Approach, Research and Information Services: An Integrated Approach for Business, and a book about predictive modeling in sports, Without a Tout: How to Pick a Winning Team.

 

Before entering academia, Miller spent nearly 15 years in business IT in the computer and transportation industries. He also directed the A. C. Nielsen Center for Marketing Research and taught market research and business strategy at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

 

He holds a Ph.D. in psychology (psychometrics) and a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Minnesota, and an MBA and master’s degree in economics from the University of Oregon.

More like a collection of magazine/newspaper articles than a book

I purchased this book before I had a chance to read any sample chapter and was disappointed after I went through the book.

Every chapter is dedicated to an application of a particular model of predictive analytics, where a (more or less) real problem is described and discussed, name of a model to use is mentioned, chart outputs are shown and used for a conclusion. In very much the same format and content of an article that you would see in for example Bloomberg business magazine. There is no substantial discussion of any of the models, and without a good understanding of such models you cannot conduct predictive Analytics.

The content of this book could be used in the first 2-3 weeks of an introductory course in Analytics discussing what is Analytics and what are some example applications. I ended up keeping the book mostly due to hassle of a return, and partly for using it as a list of major models to read elsewhere and learn.

Good book for end-users

This is a good book on using R for predictive modeling.
The books website contains all the code that is used in the book.
I tried all of the downloadable R files and they all worked as advertised.
I admit not trying the text processing though (Chapter 7) only because I don't like R for text processing.
Rather use perl or Rapidminer.

Pros:
1. All the code works
2. A good sample space of topics, so you get a feel of predictive modeling in different situations.
3. You really don't need an extensive math background, since there is virtually no math described at all.

Cons:
1. If there was one thing I wish was better done is the analysis of the results. Some of the results, unless you are already familiar with the statistical technique used, might seem foreign and will require you to do some additional research.

Summary:
Overall a good book, minus the 1-Con above.
Hint: If you do download the R programs, go through each one a piece at a time, to see what's going on. I found it's better than just "running the code". You'll have a better understanding of what's going on.

Dave Mearns is formerly Director of the Counselling Unit and Professor of Counselling at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Mick Cooper is Professor of Counselling Psychology at the University of Roehampton and is a leading international authority in the fields of person-centred, experiential, existential and relational therapies. innovative work by person-centred therapists...

This is a wonderful book that presents an innovative and far reaching approach to therapeutic change.
It is also a very readible and accesible book, altough well documented and researched.
It presents an approach for working very effectively and with a lot of sense with adolescents and adults from a position that is called "relational depth".
Im a clinical psychologist and the book opened new areas for me.
I think it should be of interest for person-centred, existentially and humanistic therapist, altough the authors said this approach could be utilized by many therapists or facilitators.
I recomend it with all my heart.

The Soviet Union: Reculturation From Above

In his now-classic essay, Professor Theodore von Laue offers a highly original interpretation of the history of the Soviet Union and Communism. The Communist overthrow of the Tsar in 1917 has traditionally been seen as an angry reaction to incompetance of the old regime. But according to von Laue, it was more than that. The new leaders desperately needed to catch up with the West. For by now the industrial revolution had transformed Western Europe while Russia lagged far behind. Determined to catch up, the Communists forced industrialization and modernization on their peoples. But herein lay the crux of the problem: "How to infuse the creativity of Western urban-industrial civilization, evolved under highly favorable geographic and historical circumstances, into habits and institutions shaped by relentless adversity." (p. 3). The method the Soviets, and Stalin in particular, used to deal with this was coercion, a un-Western way to try and emulate the West. And it failed miserably. For according to von Laue, "Where political and economic unity has been traditionally imposed by force, it cannot be readily replaced, in face of profound geographical and historical obstacles, by voluntary cooperation." Thus despite the repression, the gulags, the forced resettlements, and forced labor, the Soviet peoples never developed the creativity, initiative or cooperation to modernize. The multi-ethnic facade finally crumbled under Gorbachev's liberalization policies.

Not only is von Laue's view of the Soviet project as more of an attempt to catch up with the West than class struggle novel, but his assertion that culture, rather than material factors, drives development is also provocative. Von Laue later expanded on the themes in this book and applied them on a global scale in "The World Revolution of Westernization," where he examines the industrial and democratic revolutions that began in Britain and France, and traces their impact on the rest of the world, arguing that most cultures were unable to assimilate these concepts into their existing norms, thus disrupting these societies. The only societies that sucessfully adopted Westernization were the United States (itself an offshoot of Britain) and Japan, a highly imitative culture. But these ideas originated in "Why Lenin? Why Stalin? Why Gorbachev?" As for the future of Russia, von Laue remains dubious, arguing that it is impossible to transfer "cultural achievements, especially human attitudes, values, and institutions, from one country to other, unprepared countries." (p. 179) Perhaps that is why Russia still lags far behind.

Short, insightful and well-written

Von Laue's short history and analysis of the USSR is an unusually insightful, critical and interesting commentary. Unlike many others, it's not distorted by either apologies for or propaganda against the Soviet system. Von Laue presents Marxism-Leninism as an especially crude form of 19th century positivism and is unflinching in looking at Stalinist brutality, the scale of which becomes clear here. Yet his analysis suggests an even worse likely alternative for the Russian people, Europe and the world had the Bolsheviks been defeated: the permanent dismemberment and subjugation of Russia by Imperial, then Nazi Germany; an insight that throws Soviet history in a rather different light. His discussion of why reform of the Soviet system failed is likewise detached, critical and forces the reader to rethink conventional notions about the bases and limits of Soviet society and power. Anyone even vaguely interested in Soviet history should read this wonderful little book.

The book that makes a complex topic easy to understand

I own a lot of books on this topic.

A few I've never read because they don't draw me in and their look and feel is lethargic and boring.

This book draws you in...but even more important, makes a complicated topic easy to understand.

Andy's book is a piece of art. It's designed beautifully. It's well written and full of substance.

When I recommend books on this topic this is my first choice.

I own the iPad version as well as the physical book. I prefer the physical book.

I would highly recommend this book if you want to understand content marketing.

The key inbound marketing tactics that you need to know

In today's Internet world, it is simply not good enough to have a website. You need to understand how to attract a large, targeted audience to your website - an audience that will create buzz for your products and services. This is the promise of inbound marketing - of "content marketing".

Yet, many of us do not have the time and energy to wade through all the reports, articles and data published by HubSpot, SEOmoz and the numerous other content marketing experts out there. We simply need the most pertinent tactics that will help us be successful - so we can get on with our other jobs, or get to know enough about this area to hire the right person to do this job.

This book cuts through all the noise around content marketing - and gets straight to the key information we need. Every page in this book packs a punch. It is concise, neatly presented and hits home. It started out as a quick read - I finished it in a day - but quickly became a reference book I turned to over and over again, as I started working on implementing the techniques and strategies.

If I have one criticism of this book, it is that it misses an opportunity to go into further depth. Andy's writings on Orbit Media Studios's blog presents another level of material beyond what is in this book, and should be used as a companion to this book.

Often cited in the Chicago Tribune, and often found presenting at industry events, Andy Crestodina has been incredibly successful using the techniques in this book to build Chicago's top web design agency. It is astonishing that he is so incredibly transparent about how he has achieved this success, and proactively teaches it, through channels such as this book.

Better Marketing Through Chemistry!

Andy Crestodina's Content Chemistry is an outstanding primer into how marketing content, web design, SEO, email and social combine to create effective marketing programs.

He is one of the emerging marketers that understands that marketing is becoming a technology-based and metric-driven profession, and this new book demonstrates how to apply the curiosity and precision of a scientist to the reader's own marketing efforts.

While many marketing authors and bloggers are focused on telling marketers what they should do. Crestodina is at his best when he demonstrates exactly why. For example, he doesn't just tell you that guest blogging is good--he shows by the numbers why it can generate 200% more impact. He doesn't just tell you that optimized registration pages help, he shows how his firm generated a 1441.67% increase in conversions.

And in this book, Crestodina goes beyond why --Content Chemistry also shows "how." His overview of how to write an article explains how the writer should use the concepts of researching keyphrases, choosing headlines and links, and its eventual promotion before, during and after the actual job of writing is performed.
