About the Author
Agadurappa Mahadevaiah MBBS,DABO(USA) is the founder surgeon and senior consultant at Basavanagudi ENI Ogre Centre, and consultant at Sagar Apollo Hospital, Bangalore. After completing his MBBS degree in 1962 from Bangalore Medical College, he completed internship in neurosurgery and otolaryngology at the Ottawa General Hospital, Oanada (1963); general surgery residency at Norwalk General Hospital, Norwalk, USA (1964); residency programme in otolaryngology at St. Luke s Hospital, New York, USA (1965-68); fellowship in otology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital (1968-69); and passed American Board of Otolaryngology (1968), He was lecturer in ENT at Bangalore Medical College (1970-71) and honorary consultant in otolaryngology and skull base surgery at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (1980-98). Dr Mahadevaiah is a well known otologist in India and has performed more than 25,000 ear surgeries, He has been faculty member in many temporal bone dissection and live surgery workshops all over India since 1986. He has been conducting otology workshops twice a year since 1998, He has otology fellowship programme at his hospital and has trained many ENT surgeons. He was President of Indian Society of Otology (1991-95), President of Association of Otolaryngologists of India (1995), and President of All India Rhinology Society (2005). Bhavin Panrikh MS (ENT). Fellowship in Otology is currently consultant ENT surgeon atVijayVallabh Hospital, Krishna Development and Rehabilitation Centre, Baroda, Gujarat. He pursued his postgraduation in ENT and head and neck surgery at Baroda Medical College, MS University, Baroda, and fellowship in otology under Dr A. Mahadevaiah and Dr H Vijayendra at Rajiv Gondhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. Following the completion of the fellowship, Dr Parikh worked with Dr A. Mahadevaiah at Basavcinagudi ENT Care Centre. He has published a number of well-read articles.

About the Author

Charles S. Carver and Michael F. Scheier met in graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, where they both earned Ph.D. degrees in personality psychology. After graduation, they took jobs at the University of Miami and Carnegie Mellon University, respectively, where they have remained throughout their careers. They’ve collaborated for over three and a half decades in work that spans personality, social, motivational, clinical, and health psychology. In 1998, they received awards for Outstanding Scientific Contribution (Senior Level) from the Division of Health Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In 2007, they received the Donald T. Campbell Award for Distinguished Contributions to Social Psychology from APA’s Division of Personality and Social Psychology. Mike was the 2003—2004 President of APA’s Division of Health Psychology and currently serves as Department Head at CMU. Along with seven editions of Perspectives on Personality, the authors have published two books on self-regulation (the more recent titled On the Self-Regulation of Behavior, in 1998) and over 310 articles and chapters. Mike is an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. Chuck keeps intending to take up painting but getting distracted by things that need fixing.

Very Vague

Im currently taking Personality Psychology. While this book is good it could have been written in a more concise and direct way for students. The first test i took i noticed the difficulty with actually grasping the concepts. Being that most psychology courses are a repeat of information and different perspectives and scientific explanations of theories, I felt the authors could have been a bit more direct and to the point. In my opinion they took a very conversational position rather than a textbook application of the scientific data collected overtime. Im used to a textbook giving more vocabulary and to the point explanations of the theories. Although I could deduce the meanings of the major theories that have stood the test of time through multiple replications of the data collected, it is likely because I already have a basis for the information from other Psychology courses and textbooks.

This was a black and white version of the textbook. I understand that some of the regulations for international editions are different, but the seller never mentioned that the book was in B&W. The graphs were virtually useless since you couldn't differentiate anything. I would not have purchased the book had I known that it was printed in b&w, a detail that seemed intentionally omitted. I gave it a star because Amazon requires some star system: if I could, I would not have given it any stars.

Paley is great

Paley continues with her success in capturing the world of her kindergarteners in this treament of gender differences among younger children. She explores the comments made in class, providing the reader with an in-depth look into the kindergarteners' lives and how they see one another, especially in terms of gender. You'll laugh at what the kids have to say and wonder about Paley's observations concerning gender exclusion and segregation, as well as the children's general ideas of what it means to be a boy or a girl.

Doll Corner Superheroes?

Paley once again turns out a superb account of her observations as a kindergarten teacher. In "Boys and Girls", Paley focuses her attention on gender. She experiments with changing the way they play and in their P.E. classes. She comes up with some very good points about both the differences and similarities in young boys and girls. Most importantly though, she tells how play is the work of young children and the way that boys and girls approach that work in different matters. While she is speaking about gender issues, she is careful not to over-generalize because there are always exceptions to the rules of a classroom.
Why 4 Stars?: I have always enjoyed Paley's books and her comments about the development of kindergarten children. She truly has a gift for getting inside the minds of 5-year olds. Her books serve as a guide for teachers, parents and any adult who has any interaction with children. Many of her statements can also be applied to adults and the society at large not just her classroom.

I highly recommend this book!

I didn't know what to expect when I picked this book up. Vivian Gussin Paley (now retired) is a highly respected child psychologist, and she spent years studying children while at the University of Chicago. This book is a result of her work with kindergarten students, noting how they played, and subsequently how they developed.

She went into her research with the assumption that boys and girls naturally developed similarly, and that it was only because of societal conditioning that they became different - taking on different roles and reacting differently. However, having noted how they were similar at age 3, she was surprised to find that their play actually became quite different during kindergarten. The girls tended to play in the "doll corner," taking on realistic roles, or ones inspired by fairy tales. The boys, on the other hand, tended to play in a loud, raucous manner, often taking on the role of superheroes, movie heroes (such as Luke Skywalker), and other such powerful characters. This is the story of the development of boys and girls, and how their development naturally leads them down different roads.

I must say that I really enjoyed this book. I liked how Ms. Paley worked the stories that the children told into the weave of her narrative, showing how it changed and what it said about the children and where they were at. What I liked even more, is how she presented herself as part of the "story" of the children, her overcoming her preconceived notions, and learning to view the children as they really were.

Overall, I think that this is a fascinating book, one that anyone who is interested in human development should read. I highly recommend this book!

A Postmodern Essential

This, along with Lyotard's _The Postmodern Condition_, is perhaps one of the most famous works ever written by a Postmodern philosopher. It is well-researched and well-referenced, with many examples of popular culture given as examples in order to aide those having difficulties with the terminology. I, myself, didn't exactly agree with all of it, but I could see Baudrillards point on a lot of things. Judge for yourself, but you'll at least be pleased with the completeness. (However, JB's cultural references sometimes become outdated.)

Some improvements but still shallow and unrealistic

Kaplan's 2017 version of its GRE guide is better than the previous version, but it's still not a book I'd recommend for those who care about maximizing their scores.

Things I liked:

- the vocabulary section has been expanded, and has some useful strategies for learning new words.

- there is finally some discussion (after 6 years of ignoring them) of "critical reasoning" questions, including those which ask you to strengthen / weaken an argument

- the reading comprehension section is improved in terms of the depth with which passages are analyzed

Things I don't like:

- Kaplan questions and passages aren't realistic practice for the real test. They're too straightforward and have some weird deviations from the way real questions are written. Even if this book had a million practice questions and tests, they'd be of little use, since they're not realistically written.

- Kaplan strategies aren't very robust. They make a lot more sense when applied to Kaplan questions than when applied to real GRE questions.

- The book claims that it's all you need when its editors know very well that supplementing with ETS (the company that writes the GRE) materials would be more effective. But they also know that students often just buy one GRE prep book...so they don't mention the ETS books.

- Many of the covered math concepts just get a cursory treatment - maybe fine for those who just need a reminder - but insufficient for people who need to really learn certain things. Other tested math concepts are skipped altogether.

Overall, this book is not what it claims to be: "exactly what you need to score higher". What you ACTUALLY need is the ETS GRE books, which are the only books with official GRE questions.

For strategies and extra practice beyond the ETS books, I'd eschew anything that the big companies (like Kaplan, The Princeton Review, etc.) write and instead check out Manhattan Prep's GRE series. It's much more in-depth and consequently much more useful.
